Ms. Rachel Villanueva
Ms. Cynthia Lu Alexander

Elementary Technology Teacher of the Year

The 2004-2005 Elementary Technology Teacher of the Year is Rachel Villanueva. Ms. Villanueva has been a 5th grade teacher at Garza Elementary for six years. She realizes that technology advances are making the world more accessible to students and that teachers must realize this and provide students with the skills to compete in today’s global society.

She sees technology as a way to customize learning for her students and feels that once her student’s computer skills have superseded her own, onlythen her job is done.

Her students create original PowerPoint projects, use digital photography, use eChalk, and participated in a videoconference with other 5th graders in 5 other U.S. cities.

Ms. Villanueva is always eager to learn new technologies through training sessions and by piloting projects at her campus. She also uses her skills to mentor and assist other teachers.

Secondary Technology Teacher of the Year

The 2004-2005 Secondary Technology Teacher of the Year is Cynthia Lu Alexander. Ms. Alexander has been in the teaching profession for 10 years. She is currently teaching U.S. History and AP Government at McAllen Memorial High School.

She creates lessons that challenge students to think critically about historical events and uses technology to reinforce those lessons. Examples of incorporating the use of technology in the classroom include using a Powerpoint presentation to launch a discussion on the “Farmers Movement” and using interactive projects to help students understand concepts, such as, holding a mock presidential election online and having students invest money in a virtual stock market online.

Her philosophy is to use computers and technology to launch class discussions to encourage students to analyze human history. She feels technology is not the end and all to everything but the beginning that can be used as a spark to inspire students to learn.

Ms. Alexander is constantly looking for new ideas to apply to her teaching which will allow her to give students the strongest education possible.
